    What are backlit light boxes?

Backlit light boxes (lightboxes) are advertising structures that combine a perimeter frame, an interior LED lighting system and a translucent front printed with personalized graphics. The result is a uniform luminous surface that displays the advertising message with exceptional visibility, especially in low light conditions or at night. Unlike conventional signs that depend on external lighting (spotlights or projectors), light boxes emit light from the inside, which provides a more elegant, uniform and high-impact visual effect. They are one of the most versatile advertising supports that exist, since they can adapt to any size, shape and location. At Unical Graphic we have taken this concept to the extreme in projects such as the Venca pop-up store, where we converted the entire façade of a temporary store into a gigantic backlit light box that at night was transformed into a spectacular lighting installation.

Types of light boxes for advertising

There are several types of light boxes depending on their application and technology: Standard light box (frame): Aluminum frame with methacrylate or stretched fabric front. It is the most common format for interiors: shopping centers, airports, metro stations. Usual thicknesses from 4 to 15 cm. Textile light box (fabric lightbox): Uses sublimation printed fabric stretched over an aluminum frame with a perimeter silicone system. It offers a wrinkle-free finish, easy graphic change and compact transport. Ideal for trade fair and retail stands. Large format exterior light box: Robust structures with aluminum or steel frame, polycarbonate or methacrylate front and weather sealing. Designed for outdoor advertising on facades, mupis and canopies. Modular backlit panels: Individual panels that combine to create large luminous surfaces. It is the technology we used in the Venca pop-up store, where multiple translucent panels with a geometric pattern created a spectacular luminous mosaic. Backlit corporeal letters: Individual letters with backlighting (halo effect) or front lighting. They combine the three-dimensionality of corporeal letters with the impact of backlighting.

LED technology: the key to modern backlighting

The revolution in modern light boxes is largely due to LED technology, which has almost completely replaced traditional fluorescents: Advantages of LED in light boxes: - Energy consumption 60-70% lower than fluorescents - Lifespan of 50,000-100,000 hours (5-10 years of continuous use) - Uniform lighting without hot spots or shadows - They do not generate excessive heat, protecting the printed graphics - Available in different color temperatures (warm, neutral, cold) - Possibility of RGB LEDs for dynamic color effects Light distribution systems: - Edge-lit (side lighting): LEDs are placed on the perimeter of the frame and a diffuser plate distributes the light evenly. Allows ultra-thin softboxes (from 2 cm thick). - Back-lit: The LEDs are placed on the back forming a matrix. It offers greater luminosity and is ideal for large formats and outdoors.

    Materials for the translucent front

The front is the element that determines the visual quality of the light box: Methacrylate (PMMA): The most common material. Excellent light transmission (92%), rigidity and durability. Available in glossy or satin finish. Print directly or apply printed translucent vinyl. Polycarbonate: Greater impact resistance than methacrylate. Ideal for outdoors and areas at risk of vandalism. Slightly lower light transmission. Sublimation fabric (backlit fabric): Specific polyester fabric for backlighting, printed by sublimation. It offers vibrant colors, a glare-free finish and easy graphic change. It is the premium option for fairs and retail. Translucent vinyl: Specific vinyl for backlighting (such as 3M IJ3730) that is applied to methacrylate or polycarbonate. It allows you to print any design with vivid colors that are enhanced by back lighting. In the Venca project we used polycarbonate panels with translucent vinyl printed in the corporate pink tones, creating the backlit geometric mosaic effect that characterized the pop-up store.

Applications of light boxes in retail and events

Backlit light boxes have unlimited applications in the world of retail and events: Pop-up stores and temporary stores: As in the case of Venca, light boxes allow you to create spectacular facades that function as a showcase and advertising support simultaneously. Backlit shop windows: They replace traditional signage with luminous panels that capture pedestrians' attention even on brightly lit streets. Interior signage of shopping centers: Directories, location plans and store advertising in backlit format for maximum visibility. Trade fair stands: Textile light boxes are the standard in trade fair stands due to their lightness, ease of assembly and quick change of graphics. Totems and luminous columns: Backlit vertical elements that function as reference points on large surfaces. Façades of restaurants and establishments: Light box signs that guarantee nighttime visibility of the business. If you need a backlit light box for your business, store or event, at Unical Graphic we design, produce and install custom backlighting solutions with the highest quality of materials and finishes.
